South Africa batsman David Miller has voiced his frustration over the team’s last-minute travel to Dubai and back ahead of their Champions Trophy semifinal loss to New Zealand in Lahore. The Proteas faced a demanding travel schedule, which Miller believes negatively impacted their performance.
The event’s scheduling has come under scrutiny as both South Africa and Australia had to fly from Pakistan to Dubai before the semifinals. However, the trip seemed unnecessary, as South Africa barely spent 24 hours there before returning to Lahore without playing a match. Meanwhile, Australia remained in Dubai but suffered a semifinal defeat against India.
“It wasn’t ideal. These things do affect preparations. We didn’t get enough time to settle before the big match,” Miller remarked.
The unusual scheduling decisions stemmed from India’s refusal to travel to Pakistan, the official tournament host. As a result, all of India’s matches—including their semifinal against Australia—were scheduled in Dubai, giving them a consistent playing environment. This has led to speculation of an unfair advantage, with critics arguing that it disrupted the momentum of other teams.
Miller emphasized that such logistical issues should not occur in major ICC events, as it disrupts teams’ focus.
“We travel a lot in international cricket, but this kind of back-and-forth before a crucial match was far from ideal. Hopefully, future tournaments will have better planning.”
South Africa entered the semifinal against New Zealand with strong momentum, but their travel woes and lack of time for proper acclimatization seemingly played a role in their 312-9 defeat while chasing 362-6.
With yet another disheartening exit from an ICC tournament, South Africa will look to bounce back in future events. However, the scheduling controversy has sparked conversations about fair play and equal opportunities in international cricket.
As discussions continue, the cricketing world waits to see whether future ICC tournaments will ensure a level playing field for all teams.
