RR’s Tactics Questioned Following Another Defeat
Rajasthan Royals suffered their second defeat in IPL 2025, facing a crushing loss against Kolkata Knight Riders in Guwahati. The team struggled once again, with their batting lineup failing to impress. This loss placed them at the bottom of the points table, raising concerns about their performance and strategic decisions.
One of the most debated moves involved Shimron Hetmyer, Rajasthan’s Rs 11 crore retainee. Former New Zealand fast bowler Simon Doull strongly criticized RR’s management for sending the explosive batter at No. 8, questioning the logic behind such a decision.
Simon Doull expressed his frustration over Hetmyer’s batting position, arguing that a player of his caliber should bat much higher. He highlighted that Hetmyer has played in top-order positions in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) and has the ability to anchor innings or accelerate the scoring rate when needed.
“That’s rubbish… You don’t pay Rs 11 crore for a finisher and then send him at No. 8. He has batted at No. 3 and No. 4 in the CPL. What’s the point of spending so much if you don’t use him properly?” said Doull.
Despite having a strong squad, RR’s batting unit has consistently underperformed in the tournament. The top order has failed to build partnerships, leading to pressure on the middle and lower order. Key concerns include:
Hetmyer, known for his aggressive stroke play and finishing ability, has been underutilized this season. His promotion to a higher position could bring balance to the team. Cricket analysts believe that giving him more responsibility earlier in the innings could turn things around for RR.
With their batting strategy under scrutiny, RR’s management needs to rethink their approach before it’s too late. They have the talent but must utilize players effectively to maximize their impact. If they continue to make questionable calls, their chances of progressing in IPL 2025 will remain slim.
As the tournament progresses, all eyes will be on Rajasthan Royals to see if they can bounce back from their poor start. Can they fix their strategy, or will another misstep cost them dearly? Time will tell.
