The Gujarat Titans’ IPL 2025 journey has hit a rough patch with two crucial overseas players exiting the tournament under challenging circumstances. The back-to-back exits have left the franchise scrambling to maintain balance in a tightly-contested season.
Just days ago, Gujarat Titans confirmed that South African pace spearhead Kagiso Rabada had flown back home due to personal reasons. Rabada, a cornerstone of GT’s bowling attack, left behind a significant gap that GT struggled to fill, especially in high-pressure death overs.
“Rabada’s absence shook up GT’s strategy — his ability to deliver under pressure is irreplaceable.”
While Rabada’s departure didn’t stem from injury, his personal situation meant that the team had to reshuffle its pace options mid-season.
In another blow, the Titans announced that New Zealand all-rounder Glenn Phillips has been ruled out of the remainder of the season. He suffered a groin injury during the April 6 clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad, forcing an early exit from the tournament.
Although Phillips never featured in the playing XI, he had been active on the field as a substitute, showing energy and commitment whenever called upon. His departure cuts down on GT’s bench strength and limits their flexibility in the middle order.
“Even from the sidelines, Phillips brought fire. His loss adds to GT’s growing concerns.”
GT released an official statement on Saturday confirming Phillips’ injury and return to New Zealand. They mentioned he sustained the injury while fielding and had to withdraw from the rest of the season after medical assessments.
The franchise has not announced a replacement yet, which further raises questions about squad depth heading into the crucial middle phase of IPL 2025.
Despite these challenges, GT’s team management has remained optimistic. Head coach Ashish Nehra and skipper Shubman Gill have emphasized squad unity and adaptability in team meetings.
“We’ve built this team with depth and resilience in mind. These challenges test that philosophy.” – GT Coach Ashish Nehra
GT may now consider giving opportunities to uncapped domestic players or look at bringing in overseas replacements, if timing and availability allow. The IPL rules allow mid-season replacements, and GT may soon explore that route.
With both Phillips and Rabada out of the tournament, Gujarat Titans must adjust strategies swiftly. As they navigate their upcoming fixtures, player rotations and resource management will become key elements in staying competitive.
The loss of two impactful overseas players tests GT’s squad structure, but with smart leadership and strategic changes, they still remain strong playoff contenders.
Stay tuned as Gujarat Titans look to regroup, reshuffle, and reclaim momentum in their IPL 2025 campaign.
