The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) has launched an investigation into a highly debated stumping incident in the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League. This controversial moment occurred during a match between Gulshan Cricket Club and Shinepukur Cricket Club at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka.
“This is shocking, I have never seen anything like this before.” — On-air commentator Mazhar Uddin Omi
The incident took place in the final moments of the match when Minhajul Abedin got dismissed in an unexpected manner. He had ample time to return to his crease but failed to do so. Offspinner Naeem Islam delivered a ball outside off-stump, and wicketkeeper Alif Hasan attempted a stumping but missed initially. However, Minhajul, instead of grounding his bat, hesitated and pulled it back. This misjudgment allowed Alif to break the stumps on his second attempt, leading to Minhajul’s dismissal.
The third umpire immediately reviewed the footage, which clearly showed Minhajul’s hesitation. Despite seeing the ball go wide, he did not ground his bat properly and withdrew it just before the stumps were broken.
At the time of the incident, Shinepukur needed just six runs from seven overs to secure victory. However, Minhajul’s controversial dismissal ended their innings at 173, resulting in a five-run loss. This defeat proved crucial, as Shinepukur was already struggling in the tournament with just two points in nine matches, whereas Gulshan Cricket Club had 11 points.
The Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis (CCDM), responsible for organizing the league, immediately escalated the issue to BCB’s Anti-Corruption Unit. The CCDM is now awaiting an official report from the match umpires regarding the decision.
Sabbir Ahmed, the CCDM league coordinator, acknowledged their reply:
“We reviewed the footage. Since this was the final dismissal of the day, the match referee holds primary responsibility. The third umpire also analyzed the footage, and we expect their official report soon. We have contacted the BCB’s Anti-Corruption Unit, and they have begun their investigation.”
The BCB’s Anti-Corruption Unit is now closely examining the incident. If any irregularities are found, the board might take strict action. Shinepukur Cricket Club’s management has also expressed concerns and is awaiting the final report before making any official statements.
This incident has sparked debates among cricket analysts and fans, questioning whether Minhajul’s dismissal was purely an error in judgment or if there was an underlying issue that needs deeper scrutiny. As the BCB investigates, the cricketing community eagerly awaits further developments on this controversial moment in the Dhaka Premier League.
